Lion’s Mane in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Lion’s Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), known in Chinese as Hóu Tóu Gū (猴头菇), has long been appreciated in Chinese food culture and traditional herbal systems for its gentle and nourishing nature. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the mind is not viewed in isolation, but as part of a wider network involving the Heart, Spleen and Kidney systems, which together influence clarity, focus, memory and mental steadiness.

Within this framework, Lion’s Mane was traditionally associated with supporting the Spleen and Stomach, organs that in TCM are responsible for transforming food into Qi and nourishing both the body and the mind. When these systems are considered balanced, mental clarity and concentration are thought to arise more naturally. For this reason, Lion’s Mane was often included in dishes intended to be sustaining and grounding rather than stimulating.

Rather than being used as a strong medicinal herb, Lion’s Mane was most commonly prepared as a food, appearing in soups, broths and slow-cooked meals. This reflects a core TCM principle: that steady nourishment over time plays a role in maintaining mental focus and emotional balance. Foods that were regarded as gentle and harmonising were often chosen to support periods of study, meditation or refined work.

Traditional texts describe Lion’s Mane as mild in nature and neutral in temperature, qualities that made it suitable for regular use within the diet. It was typically combined with other ingredients, aligning with the TCM belief that balance is achieved through thoughtful combinations rather than single substances.

Today, Lion’s Mane continues to be viewed through this traditional lens as a mushroom historically linked to nourishment, clarity and mindful focus within everyday routines.
