Chaga in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a dark, rugged fungus that grows primarily on birch trees in colder climates. While widely recognised today for its striking exterior and deep, earthy flavour, Chaga has a long record of use in traditional herbal practices, including influences found within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Although Chaga is more commonly associated with Siberian and northern folk traditions, its qualities eventually found resonance with TCM principles, where it was interpreted through the lens of energetic balance rather than modern biochemical pathways.

In TCM, Chaga was traditionally linked to supporting the Spleen and Kidney meridians. These meridians, within classical TCM philosophy, represent foundational energy, stability, and the body’s capacity to adapt to change. Rather than being valued for specific nutrients, Chaga was viewed symbolically as a fungus that reflected endurance — shaped by harsh climates and slow growth over many years — qualities that herbal practitioners associated with grounding and resilience.
Some traditional perspectives also connected Chaga with the concept of Jing, a term referring to one’s core essence. Jing was regarded as a precious resource linked to longevity, steadiness and the ability to navigate life’s demands. By aligning with this philosophy, Chaga earned a place among fungi thought to harmonise one’s inner resources and provide a sense of sustained presence.

These interpretations do not stem from laboratory testing or modern biomedical research but from the holistic framework that guides TCM. Herbs, mushrooms and natural substances were evaluated through observation, symbolism and experiential use rather than measurable physiological outcomes.

Today, Chaga’s continued appeal reflects a blend of cultural history and contemporary curiosity. Its role in Traditional Chinese Medicine offers insight into how earlier generations understood strength, endurance and the natural world — perspectives that still shape modern interest in this enigmatic fungus.
